Kindle for PC

I was reading one of my regular technology blogs today (but which one it was has escaped me) and they had an article on a new Amazon product, Kindle for PC. Now the kindle (electronic device that lets you store books and read them much like an ipod stores and plays music) has been available internationally for a few weeks now but I just have not been interested due to a)the high cost and b) yet ANOTHER piece of technology to carry around.  However the answer to this problem has arrived…Kindle for PC!

Basically amazon has made it possible to buy kindle versions of books and have them on a regular PC, no need for a Kindle! Of course, they’d prefer you bought a kindle too and it is designed to sync well, but there is no need. I just bought a fiction book I’ve wanted for a while which is $20-30. It was $10 as a kindle version and I can now read it on my PC, something I am on a lot anyway! This is great.

If you too want cheap books and don’t mind reading them on a pc, go to Amazon to download the FREE program

I will still by hardcopy versions of many books because there is still something to holding a real book in my hands, but in some cases having a copy on my computer will make things SO MUCH EASIER and it also cuts down on shipping time…as the book is downloaded instantly!

Brilliant.

'Third Places'

I was reading and article over at Phil Cooke’s blog, called “Why “Atmosphere” Matters in Connecting with a Community” and it got me thinking about the trendy phrase ‘third places’. I’ve read a lot about creating third places in emerging church philosophy and the idea’s behind it sound great. For those new to the concept, the basic idea is that people generally spend time at work, at home and at ‘third places’. Good third places sometimes overlap with home and work. The story in Phil’s blog is the story of how Starbucks came to be as successful as it was because it was almost the perfect third place. It allowed for relationship to build, it allowed people to combine work with this, it provided all kinds of benefits OTHER THAN buying and drinking coffee.

The idea of ‘third place’ is behind a lot of missional activity in running coffee shops, or pubs, or other spaces in a missional context. This is great! However another idea for a third place came to mind. It probably is being done somewhere, but is an interesting idea I believe…

Could church buildings be used as third places for people that work ‘from home’?

By this I mean, is it maybe feasible to set up a church building to enable any of its members who USUALLY work from home, or somewhere other than a set office, as a workplace?

I’m having difficulty wording what I mean by this, but the basic idea is to enable believers who normally work from home (or in a coffee shop, or whatever) to ALSO be able to meet together daily?  This wouldn’t really be an option for people who have to work at a specific location, but as the number of home offices has increased maybe this could be an effective use of a church building during the week?

If you know somewhere already doing this I’d love to hear about it!

Pegasus Note Taker

Found something to blog about!

Was reading a tech magazine the other day and came across a ‘note taker’. What is a note taker? From webgenius website,

This gadget captures your handwriting then, via software on your computer, turns your scrawl into editable text. It can save you hours every week in retyping handwriting notes. It also allows you to capture drawings and store everything electronically.

Why this looks so good to me is, if you prefer to write notes, rather than type them direct to a computer OR if taking a laptop to various places is awkward, you could use this little device, write your notes on plain paper, then upload the notes from the device and it will translate your notes to editable text.

Fantastic! Won’t be buying it myself only because…well I need all the money I can keep right now, but I love finding new little cool gadgets.
